Jonathan Bennett Bonilla (they/them) is a writer, translator, editor, and educator who grew up between languages, moving around the US, Costa Rica, and Spain. Bennett Bonilla is Chair of the Philosophy Department at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, MA and also teaches literature and creative writing in the Humanities Department. Their area of specialization and interest is in History, Theory and Practice of Social Movements. Bennett Bonilla is an advocate for social justice and is committed to disrupting white supremacy and cis-hetero-patriarchy in all of its institutional forms. They have served on several equity task forces throughout their time at MCC and were a Racial Equity Initiative Fellow in 2021, where they developed an honors Race, Class & Gender course with other fellows.
During their time at Middlesex, they co-founded the La Guagua Poetry Festival, bringing together poets and translators from around the world along with editing the La Guagua Poetry Anthology published in concordance with the festival each year. They also founded and launched the literary journal Dead River Review.
In 2021, Bennett Bonilla earned their Ph.D, in Philosophy, Art & Critical Theory from the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where they studied with Fred Moten, Stefano Harney, Judith Butler, Karen Barad, Terrence Malik, Wim Wenders, Giorgio Agamben, Chris Fynsk, Werner Hammacher, Avital Ronnell, Catharine Malabou, Anne DuFormantelle, and Jean-Luc Nancy. Their dissertation, Fragmentaires du Blanchot, closely annotated the literary form shifts in Blanchot’s fragmentary works, especially The Writing of the Disaster.
They live on the north shore of Boston with their partner, children, and dog Lex.
